American Landmark Event: Comstock Lode Discovery
On June 12, 1859, 167 years ago tomorrow, is the date the Comstock Lode is thought to have been discovered by miners Peter O'Riley and Patrick McLaughlin. Prospector Henry Comstock claimed part of the find, leading to the lode being named after him.
This discovery of rich silver ore near Virginia City, Nevada, triggered a massive mining boom, making it the first major silver deposit in the United States.
