Independence Day, celebrated tomorrow and every July 4th, marks the historic moment, 250 years ago, in 1776 when the thirteen American colonies declared their separation from British rule.

The adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress was a turning point in world history. It laid the foundation for the creation of a sovereign and free United States of America.
One memorable anecdote from Independence Day’s early history involves John Adams, who believed the holiday should be celebrated on July 2nd—the day Congress voted for independence—not July 4th, the day the declaration was adopted. Adams reportedly refused to attend July 4th celebrations in protest of the date discrepancy. Ironically, both he and Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, exactly 50 years after the signing.
- The Declaration of Independence was written to formally announce and justify the colonies’ decision to break from British rule.
- Thomas Jefferson is credited as the principal author, with input from John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston.
- There were 56 signers of the Declaration, representing all 13 colonies; of them, two—John Adams and Thomas Jefferson—later became Presidents of the United States.
