American Landmark Event: Manifest Destiny
President James K. Polk spoke extensively about Manifest Destiny. Most notably, and publically, 181 years ago today, on March 4, 1845 in his Inaugural Address. And, again later that same year on December 2, 1845 in his State of the Union Address.
In these speeches Polk emphasized the divine right and duty for U.S. expansion across North America, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. As noted in his inaugural speech and first annual message he discussed both Texas annexation and Oregon.
Driving Manifest Destiny was the conviction that such expansion was both justified and inevitable, rooted in the principles of democracy, liberty, and progress. This vision became a defining force behind America’s growth, shaping national policy and influencing generations to come.
During his presidency, Polk oversaw the annexation of Texas, negotiated the Oregon boundary with Great Britain, and led the nation through the Mexican-American War. Under Polk, the United States grew by more than a million square miles, forever changing the map and identity of America.
