American Landmark Event: Secret Service Established
The United States Secret Service was originally established 161 years ago today, on July 5, 1865.
As a branch of the Treasury Department its initial focus was to combat widespread counterfeiting following the Civil War. The agency quickly became an essential component of government operations, particularly in protecting key figures and assets.
Over time, its mission expanded to include other critical areas of national security.
Today, one of the most visible roles of the Secret Service is its responsibility to protect the President of the United States. This includes both physical security measures and the coordination of extensive logistical support during public and private appearances.
Their work ensures the safety of the President around the clock, both at the White House and during travel.

-
Since 2003, the Secret Service operates under the Department of Homeland Security.
- In 1965, Congress authorized the Secret Service (Public Law 89-186) to protect a former president and his/her spouse during their lifetime, unless they decline protection.
- Beyond protection duties, the Secret Service conducts investigations into financial crimes, including counterfeiting, cybercrime, and fraud involving U.S. financial systems.
