President Calvin Coolidge

Calvin Coolidge was born 153 years ago today, on July 4, 1872, in Plymouth Notch, Vermont. He grew up in a modest, rural setting shaped by traditional New England values. He later attended Amherst College in Massachusetts, graduating with honors in 1895.

Before becoming President, Coolidge built a steady career in law and public service, starting as a city councilman and rising through positions including mayor, state legislator, and Republican governor of Massachusetts. He gained national attention for his firm response to the Boston Police Strike of 1919. His calm leadership and constitutional principles helped position him as a trusted vice-presidential candidate under Warren G. Harding.

As a Republican, Coolidge became the 30th President in 1923 following Harding's sudden death and was elected in his own right in 1924. His presidency is known for economic prosperity, limited government, and a commitment to constitutional restraint. He cut taxes, reduced the national debt, and supported business growth through conservative fiscal policy.

  • Coolidge was married to Grace Anna Goodhue and had two sons, John and Calvin Jr., the latter of whom died while Coolidge was in office.
  • Known for his reserved demeanor, Coolidge once responded to a challenge to “say three words” with the witty reply: “You lose.”
  • The Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum is located in Northampton, Massachusetts, and contains letters, speeches, and personal documents from his life and presidency.
  • Nearby, visitors can also explore Amherst College and the Calvin Coolidge Bridge, which honor his legacy in the region where he studied and governed.
