Flag Day

Flag Day

Flag Day (Tomorrow June 14th)

Flag Day traces its origins to June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress officially adopted the Stars and Stripes as the national flag of the United States. The purpose was to establish a unified symbol for the new nation as it fought for independence. Flag Day was later made an official national observance by an Act of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1949.

One entertaining anecdote from the history of Flag Day involves Bernard J. Cigrand, a Wisconsin schoolteacher, who passionately promoted the idea of an annual flag observance. In 1885, Cigrand held what is believed to be the first formal Flag Day celebration at his school. His lifelong efforts earned him the title "Father of Flag Day" among many historians.

  • The Continental Congress was the governing body of the American colonies and later the United States during and immediately after the American Revolution.
  • In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation establishing June 14 as Flag Day, encouraging Americans to honor the flag with ceremonies and displays.
  • In 1927, President Calvin Coolidge reaffirmed the importance of Flag Day through a proclamation that called for nationwide observances recognizing the flag's significance.
