Francis Scott Key

Francis Scott Key was born 246 years ago today, in Frederick County, Maryland, on August 1, 1779. He graduated from St. John's College and became a successful lawyer practicing in Washington, D.C. Throughout his career, he was known for his public service and deep involvement in national affairs.

Key wrote the poem "Defence of Fort M'Henry" in September 1814 after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. He had boarded a British ship to negotiate the release of a prisoner and was detained during the attack. The sight of the American flag still flying at dawn inspired him to write the now-famous words.

  • "Defence of Fort M'Henry" was later set to the melody of a popular British song and officially became the U.S. national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," in 1931.
  • Francis Scott Key was a close advisor to President Andrew Jackson and supported several of his policies, including efforts related to national unity and law enforcement.
  • From 1833 to 1841, Key served as the District Attorney for the District of Columbia, where he handled major legal matters for the federal government.
