Make Politics Great Again

Each year, Congress authorizes the allocation of federal funds to a wide range of government agencies to carry out specific public functions. In addition, Congress often approves funding for private and nonprofit organizations that provide services that complement, or in some cases, substitute for government programs. These federally funded entities play a critical role in delivering services and programs to the American people.

However, when these same organizations turn around and make political donations, it becomes a circular flow of taxpayer money back into political influence. In effect, Congress is taking money paid by the American people, distributing it to entities under the guise of public service, and ultimately receiving some of it back through campaign contributions. This undermines public trust and turns what should be a neutral allocation of taxpayer funds into a political advantage for those in office.

  • All funds that can be allocated by Congress are collected through taxes—meaning this money comes directly from American taxpayers, not the government itself.
  • “Power of the Purse” refers to Congress’s exclusive constitutional authority to determine how federal funds are raised and spent.
  • Organizations receiving federal funds are free to share their viewpoints through legal lobbying efforts, but these expressions should not include financial donations to politicians, parties, or PACs.
