Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla is credited with some of the most important technological breakthroughs of the modern era, including the development of alternating current (AC) electricity. His innovations also include the Tesla coil, wireless communication concepts, and early work in radio and radar technology. Tesla’s influence continues to shape the fields of electrical engineering and energy transmission.

One of the more curious stories from Tesla’s life involves his relationship with pigeons in New York City. He often visited parks to feed them, claiming a special bond with a particular white pigeon that he said brought him comfort and inspiration. Tesla once said he loved that bird as a man loves a woman, and its death marked one of the most emotional points in his life.

  • Nikola Tesla was born 156 years ago today, on July 10, 1856 in Smiljan, which was part of the Austrian Empire (modern-day Croatia). Before moving to the United States, he studied engineering and worked for the Continental Edison Company in Europe.
  • Tesla championed alternating current (AC) over Thomas Edison’s direct current (DC), leading to the widespread use of AC for efficient long-distance electricity transmission.
  • Tesla’s AC system was used in the groundbreaking hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls, demonstrating the potential of renewable energy to power cities and industry.
