When a Politician Might Cross the Line
Sedition is the act of inciting rebellion against the authority of the United States government through speech, writing, or behavior. A U.S. citizen could commit sedition by encouraging others to resist lawful authority or conspiring to disrupt the government’s ability to function. Federal law treats sedition as a serious offense, threatening the very foundations of a stable society.
One notable historical example of sedition is the 1949 case of Harry Bridges, a labor leader accused of having connections to the Communist Party. Although initially convicted of lying under oath about his affiliations, his conviction was later overturned, but the case highlighted the sensitivity to internal threats during the Cold War. Bridges' ordeal remains a significant example of the government's efforts to defend against perceived sedition within its own borders.
- Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, was criticized for making misleading public statements about classified information during the investigations into President Trump; while deception can erode public trust, it typically falls short of meeting the legal threshold for sedition.
- Representative Eric Swalwell and Senator Dianne Feinstein, both Democrats from California, faced scrutiny for their connections to individuals associated with the Chinese Communist Party; while deeply troubling for national security, such relationships would not automatically qualify as sedition without clear evidence of intent to undermine the government.
- Hillary Clinton, Democrat presidential candidate in 2016, helped fund the Steele Dossier, which was later discredited but nonetheless spurred extensive investigations and media coverage; although damaging to public discourse, this act would not be classified legally as sedition without proven intent to incite rebellion or overthrow governmental authority.
