The Three Stooges
The Three Stooges were a legendary American comedy trio most famously comprised of Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Howard. Known for their slapstick style, the trio performed in vaudeville, short films, and television from the 1930s through the 1970s. Moe was the ringleader with his bowl haircut, Larry provided the zany spontaneity, and Curly became a fan favorite with his unique voice and physical comedy.
Their routines involved exaggerated physical antics, classic eye pokes, hammer hits, and head slaps—often set to a soundtrack of squeaks, bonks, and whoops. Famous quotes such as “Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk,” “Why, I oughta…,” and “Soitenly!” became instantly recognizable pop culture markers. The Three Stooges crafted a comedic legacy that still resonates with audiences of all ages.
- Shemp Howard was Moe and Curly’s older brother and was actually one of the original Stooges before Curly. He returned to replace Curly in 1946 and continued performing with the group until his passing in 1955.
- Joe Besser joined the Stooges in 1956, bringing a different energy to the act with a more childlike persona and a less slapstick style, appearing in 16 shorts before leaving the team.
- Joe DeRita, known as “Curly Joe,” joined in 1958 and helped revive the act for feature films and TV appearances through the 1960s, giving the trio a second wave of popularity.
