Thomas Jefferson

We hold these truths to be self-evident...

Thomas Jefferson was born on 282 years ago today, on April 13, 1743, in Shadwell, Virginia. He grew up on his family’s plantation and later attended the College of William & Mary, where he studied law. Jefferson passed away on July 4, 1826, leaving behind a lasting legacy in American history.

Before becoming President, Jefferson was a key figure in the founding of the United States. He served in the Virginia House of Burgesses, was the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and later became the first Secretary of State under President George Washington. He also played a critical role as the third Vice President of the United States under John Adams.

During his presidency from 1801 to 1809, Jefferson oversaw the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the nation. He also commissioned the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the newly acquired western territory. His leadership helped establish principles of limited government and individual liberty that continue to shape the nation today.
