Too Many Special Days Creates Too Complicated of a Calendar
Congress has declared an overwhelming number of symbolic days, weeks, and months—cluttering the national calendar and consuming legislative time better spent elsewhere. While these proclamations may carry symbolic weight, they often result in fragmented and divisive expressions of identity. A crowded calendar of celebrations tends to separate Americans rather than unite them, undermining our shared national identity and the foundational concept of the American melting pot.
Instead of adding more symbolic days, Congress should establish broad categories of recognition. For instance, a single “Heritage Month” could honor immutable characteristics found in American's heritage—replacing the need for separate months like “Women’s History Month,” “Asian Pacific Islanders History Month,” and others. Going forward, new celebrations would simply be added to their respective category on a designated date, streamlining the national calendar and reinforcing a unified cultural ethos.
- “Constitution Day” could celebrate all those—leaders, activists, and everyday Americans—who advanced and protected the rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. This consolidated observance would recognize events and people tied to civil rights and liberties, combining days like Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth, and National Days of Prayer and Remembrance. Constitution Day would fall on and replace Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.
- “Founders Day” could replace Columbus Day and honor the individuals, both national and local, who played a role in founding the United States and its communities. The celebration would be inclusive of people who helped shape America’s foundations and would fall on the same date as Columbus Day.
- “Celebration Day” would be a new national holiday observed on the first Monday of August, a month currently without any federal holidays. This day would consolidate recognition of all other special days like “National Day of the American Cowboy,” “National Tartan Day,” and even “National Kindergarten Recognition Day.” No new commemorative weeks or months would be permitted; all Congressional recognitions would be celebrated solely on Celebration Day.
