William Howard Taft was born 168 years ago today, on September 15, 1857, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was raised in a politically engaged family and received his education at Yale University, graduating second in his class. Taft went on to study law at the Cincinnati Law School and was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1880.

Before becoming president, Taft served as a judge, U.S. Solicitor General, and Governor-General of the Philippines. He later became Secretary of War under President Theodore Roosevelt, earning a reputation as a skilled administrator. His wide-ranging government experience made him a natural choice for the Republican nomination in 1908.

As president from 1909 to 1913, Taft focused on trust-busting and civil service reform. He supported the 16th Amendment, which authorized a federal income tax, and expanded the federal judiciary system. Though often overshadowed by his predecessor, his legalistic and measured approach left a lasting imprint on U.S. governance.

  • William Howard Taft married Helen Herron in 1886, and together they had three children. Helen played an active role as First Lady and was instrumental in promoting the arts and culture in Washington, D.C.
  • Taft is the only person in U.S. history to serve as both President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He considered his time as Chief Justice—appointed in 1921—to be the greatest honor of his career.
  • The William Howard Taft National Historic Site is located in Cincinnati, Ohio, at his birthplace and childhood home. The site includes a museum and library with extensive personal and professional documents. It is situated near the University of Cincinnati and other historic landmarks.
